After documenting CACI, we continued our cultural storytelling journey with Ta’aktana Labuan Bajo through a documentary about Sopi, the traditional spirit of East Nusa Tenggara.
Sopi is more than local liquor. It is part of daily life, ceremony, and community bonding in Flores. Traditionally distilled from palm sap, Sopi represents hospitality, respect, and togetherness. It is often served during rituals, family gatherings, and important cultural events.
The goal of this documentary was not to promote alcohol, but to explore the meaning behind it. The process. The people. The tradition passed down through generations.
Over several days, we documented the full journey. From tapping palm trees to the distillation process, from quiet preparation moments to communal sharing. The smoke, the fire, the traditional tools, the hands that carefully manage each step. It is raw, honest, and deeply rooted in local identity.
Ta’aktana, as a luxury resort connected to the culture of Labuan Bajo, wanted to highlight how local heritage shapes the experience of staying there. The documentary bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern hospitality, showing that culture is not decoration. It is foundation.
The result is a 4 minute 2 second documentary film that captures the authenticity of Sopi and the spirit of the community behind it.
